Do They Know How They’re Feeling?
Emotional literacy is not something we are really 'taught' so The Feelings Wheel is a powerful visual tool for helping to identify and articulate emotions with precision (very useful for Grown Up's as well as Young Minds).
Created by two psychologists Plutchik and Willcox, it helps build emotional vocabulary & self-awareness. Moving from generic terms like "I feel sad" to more nuanced "I feel sad because I am disappointed and hurt" provides much clearer insight into feelings to therefore help illuminate a path forward.
We find it useful to have up somewhere around the house - maybe stick it on the fridge and use to help your Young Mind next time they (or You!) are feeling all the feels but can't quite name them.
Help them by using the wheel yourself…."Today I am feeling angry & irritated because someone at work didn’t do what I expected them to do - I am going to do a 5 minute Chirpy meditation to calm my brain down and have a conversation with them tomorrow about why they missed their deadline and the impact it had on my evening."
Today, we are feeling Happy because we are Enthusiastic to share this with you.
Let us know if it helps!
