Neurodiversity, biology & how supplements can help.

Neurodiversity, biology & how supplements can help.

Every child relies on the same core biological systems, but how well those systems are supported can show up differently from child to child: in trouble focusing, big emotions, restless nights, or a low tolerance for everyday stress. Some nutrients can support the biology behind mood, emotional balance and focus. These are the four systems we designed The Mood One around.

  • Neurotransmitters: such as dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, GABA and glutamate all play a role in attention, motivation, mood and emotional regulation.

  • Sleep and circadian rhythm: melatonin release and circadian timing underpin the ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake rested.

  • Oxidative stress and inflammation: a healthy nervous system depends on a balance between inflammation and antioxidant defences. When that balance is off, it can affect the parts of nerve cells that make and send neurotransmitter signals and trigger low-grade neuroinflammation that disrupts the circadian pathways controlling sleep.

  • Microbiome: a diverse and balanced gut microbiome supports neurotransmitter production, immune regulation and the inflammatory balance that underpins healthy brain function.

The ingredients

Led by the science on these four systems, we formulated The Mood One with four key ingredients:

  • Saffron: modulates key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline and GABA. Its bioactive compounds (crocins, crocetin, safranal) also reduce inflammation and oxidative stress (1). Through the serotonin pathway, saffron plays a role in melatonin production, the hormone central to healthy sleep-wake regulation (2).

  • Zinc: supports neurotransmitter synthesis and regulation, contributing to normal neurological and cognitive function. Zinc also has antioxidant properties, helping to balance everyday oxidative stress and inflammation (3).

  • Vitamin D3: is a neurosteroid that helps to regulate serotonin and dopamine synthesis, supporting mood and the nervous system. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, helping to calm neuroinflammation, and plays a role in hormone balance (4).

  • Acerola Cherry: is rich in vitamin C and phytonutrients like carotenoids, flavonoids and anthocyanins, acerola cherry protects cells from oxidative stress and reduces inflammation (5).

Finally, our sweetener (FOS or Fructo-Oligosaccharide) is a pre-biotic fibre that feeds beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, supporting the gut barrier and immune balance that the nervous system relies on via the gut-brain axis (6).

Why This Matters More for Some Families

These four biological systems are universal. But research suggests neurodivergent children more often show differences in these same areas: altered neurotransmitter signalling has been observed across a range of neurodevelopmental conditions (7-10), sleep and circadian disruption is common (11), oxidative stress is a recognised biological feature in some autism spectrum presentations (12), and differences in gut microbiota have been found (13), along with dietary preferences impacting the richness of the microbiome (14). That's part of why we hear from so many parents of neurodivergent children — and part of why we think it's worth explaining, clearly, what the science does and doesn't say. It doesn't say nutrition changes neurodivergence, but these are the same everyday biological systems every child depends on, and they're the ones we designed this product to support.

The Bigger Picture

Nutrition is one piece of supporting a child's wellbeing, alongside feel-good habits stacked over time — mindfulness, exercise, time in nature and good sleep. The Mood One was designed to support the biology behind mood, emotional balance and focus, targeting pathways involved in neurotransmitter function, inflammation, and oxidative stress.
