What is Sophrology and how can it help your child's mental wellbeing?

What is Sophrology and how can it help your child's mental wellbeing?

What if, instead of always telling our children to calm down, we could give them simple tools to actually understand how?

Sophrology has been part of my life for over 30 years and, through my work at BeSophro, I have seen how powerful simple mind body techniques can be at every stage of life.

Becoming a mum gave me a new perspective on how naturally children can respond to the practice.Sophrology combines breathing, gentle movement, relaxation and visualisation.

Born in the medical world in the 1960s, it has been practised across Continental Europe for decades, including in schools and hospitals. In France and Switzerland, health insurance providers also reimburse Sophrology sessions, reflecting how established the practice has become.

With my son Eliott, Sophrology has never been about asking him to sit still and meditate. We use short exercises that fit into real life. We might practise before an important moment, use breathing and movement to release tension, or visualisation to connect with confidence and inner strength.

What fascinates me is how these tools can gradually become part of a child's own emotional toolkit. They learn to recognise what is happening in their body and discover simple ways to respond.

At BeSophro, we recently explored stress in children in more depth, including how it can show up and how parents can gently support emotional balance.

We cannot remove every challenge from our children's lives, but we can help them build calm, confidence and resilience from an early age.
