The science behind The Zen One
Rest can be hard for some people. We may want to switch off, or decide to, but whether our bodies actually can is rooted in biology. We formulated The Zen One to nourish the pathways that support exactly that. Here's what's inside and why it's there.
Chamomile, the quiet bloom of calm
Chamomile has been linked to calm for centuries and there's real science behind that association. Chamomile contains flavonoids that support GABA pathways in the brain, the inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps the nervous system calm down. Studies show it can reduce nighttime awakenings and help manage everyday anxious feelings (1,2).
Lavender, the flower of soothing balance
Oral lavender is thought to modulate serotonin signalling in the brain to support calm (3). Review of trials has found significant results in its favour for helping with anxious feelings and stress (3,4,5), both of which can affect rest.
Vitamin B6 powers calm and clarity
B6 is the behind-the-scenes builder of serotonin, dopamine and GABA, the neurotransmitters that regulate mood and relaxation (6). It helps convert tryptophan into serotonin, which is also the neurotransmitter the body uses to make melatonin to support the sleep-wake cycle (7).
Vitamin B12 powers relaxed, balanced energy
B12 works alongside B6 to produce those same mood-steadying neurotransmitters, supports healthy nerve function and helps regulate the body's natural sleep rhythm (6,7). Low B12 is linked to fatigue, mood dips, and disrupted sleep, so it really does have an impact on mood (8).
And there are properties all four ingredients share
Every ingredient in The Zen One has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress quietly disrupt the nervous system, making it harder for the brain to regulate mood, manage stress and settle into rest. All four ingredients help support the nerve cells and pathways that promote healthy sleep and relaxation
But there's one more thing worth knowing about. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), sometimes called the brain's fertiliser, supports the growth, repair and resilience of nerve cells. BDNF plays a key role in learning and memory, but stress can suppress it (9). The Zen One's ingredients support this important protein:
- Chamomile helps reduce stress-induced suppression of BDNF, keeping those growth and repair signals switched on (10)
- Lavender supports rest and relaxation, to help manage stress, which can suppress BDNF (9)
- Vitamin B6 helps regulate homocysteine, an amino acid linked to mood symptoms when elevated, which early research suggests has a role in BDNF regulation (11)
- Vitamin B12 supports the methylation processes, which includes how the body regulates BDNF production (6)
